PRESIDING BISHOP

THE MOST REV. SEAN W. ROWE

A Transformational Leader for Times of Change in the Episcopal Church

The Most Reverend Sean Rowe, 49, has established himself as a key figure in the Episcopal Church following his election as Presiding Bishop at the 81st General Convention held in Louisville, Kentucky. His appointment, secured in the first ballot by the House of Bishops and confirmed by the House of Deputies, reflects his ability and experience in addressing the denomination’s current challenges.

A Leader in Times of Transformation

The Most Reverend Rowe’s tenure as Bishop of Northwestern Pennsylvania and Provisional Bishop of Western New York positioned him as an expert in implementing adaptive responses to denominational decline. In his investiture sermon, Rowe expressed his vision of preparing the church for a time of great change, relying on the resilience and collective faith of the Episcopal community.

Drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Lazarus, he emphasized that the process of shedding obsolete structures and internal divisions is essential for revitalizing the church. “This liberation from ourselves, from our structures, and from our wounded world will require all the resilience we can muster,” he highlighted. His message calls for setting aside earthly attachments and outdated conceptions to become faithful stewards of congregations and communities.

A Different Investiture

The investiture ceremony of The Most Reverend Sean Rowe marked a significant departure from past traditions. Instead of opting for a grand event at the Washington National Cathedral, he chose a more modest and accessible gathering. This deliberate approach aimed not only to reduce the service’s carbon footprint but also to encourage virtual participation from the church’s more than 100 dioceses.

The diversity and cultural richness of the Episcopal Church were evident in the video greetings sent by dioceses, showcasing the many local expressions of faith and community. This inclusivity reinforces Rowe’s commitment to leading a church that embraces its plurality and is prepared for the challenges ahead.

A New Chapter for the Episcopal Church

Presiding Bishop Sean Rowe steps into his role with a profound sense of mission and a focus on transformation. His leadership is poised to serve as a catalyst for reimagining the church’s role in a rapidly changing world. With a combination of humility, vision, and determination, The Most Reverend Rowe promises to guide the Episcopal Church toward a path of spiritual and communal renewal.

His investiture not only inaugurates a new era for the denomination but also sets an example of how faith and innovation can coexist in the pursuit of a more inclusive and resilient future.

Innovative Leadership in the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas

The Right Reverend Cathleen Chittenden Bascom made history in the Episcopal Church when she was consecrated as the 10th Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas on March 2, 2019. In a momentous event held at the majestic Grace Cathedral in Topeka, The Right Reverend Bascom became the first woman to hold this position in the diocese’s more than 160-year history. Her consecration was also historic on a national level, as she was the first diocesan bishop elected from an all-female slate of candidates.

The consecration service was presided over by The Most Reverend Michael B. Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate, known for his charismatic preaching and leadership in the Episcopal Church. She earned her Master of Divinity from Seabury-Western Seminary in 1990. She later obtained a Doctor of Ministry in Preaching from the Iliff School of Theology in Denver. Her passion for the humanities led her to pursue a Master of Arts in Modern Literature from the University of Exeter in England and a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing and the Environment from Iowa State University.
